Both systems have their place. WooCommerce suits small stores with few products that already have a WordPress website. Shopware 6 is the stronger choice if you want to scale, need B2B features, have to model complex pricing rules or value GDPR compliance and professional support from Germany. For the DACH market Shopware also offers a much broader ecosystem of local payment providers, carriers and ERP integrations.

The commercial editions are worthwhile if you need extended support, B2B features, the Flow Builder for automation or the Rule Builder for complex pricing rules. Many projects run fine on the free Community Edition with custom extensions. Note: since 2025 the Community Edition has a fair-use limit of around 1 million euros annual GMV; above that you need a commercial plan. We advise you honestly which edition makes sense for your requirements.

With self-hosting (on-premise or managed hosting) you keep full control over code, data and the timing of updates, which is the right choice when custom plugins, ERP connections or special data protection requirements are involved. Shopware Cloud (SaaS) reduces operating effort considerably but only allows app-based extensions, no classic plugins with deep changes. For most mid-sized projects with system integrations we recommend a self-hosted set-up with a specialised Shopware host. Which option fits your project is settled in the requirements analysis.

Yes. The default search runs directly on the shop database and struggles with typos, synonyms and large catalogues. A dedicated search backend fixes this: Shopware officially supports Elasticsearch and OpenSearch, and for many mid-sized shops we consider the lightweight open-source engine Meilisearch the more practical choice, with typo tolerance and fast response times built in.
